Ride of Silence
On one night in cities around the world, bicyclists gather annually to ride in silence to raise awareness of cyclists' right to ride on the road and to honor the fallen cyclists no longer with us. Cyclists are reminded to follow the rules of the road. We ride in hope to end the tragedy on our road. We meet at: 6:30PM on Wednesday May 16th 2012 Recreation Park, 500 East Miner, Arlington Heights, IL The ride leaves at 7PM and is approximately 10 miles at 10 mph. Questions should be emailed to
rideofsilence@cyclearlington.com
Even if you cannot ride, your are invited to come see the riders leave on the ride. In 2003, Chris Phelan organized the first Ride of Silence in Dallas, Texas after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit by the mirror of a passing bus and was killed. Chris assumed this was a one-time event. The response from cyclists in Dallas was outstanding with approximately 1000 participants. As word spread, Chris was begged to make the Ride of Silence an annual event and the event spread to other cities. The Ride of Silence is unique among other events around the world. Rides occur at 7PM local time World Wide.
There are no fees and no registration and rides are locally organized. Arlington Heights Bicycle Club and the Arlington Heights Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission first participated with a ride in 2003 and have continued annually since 2003. In 2003, there were about one dozen participants and over the years the ride has grown. Last year 2011, there were about 125 participants in Arlington Heights.
